At Green Park Elementary in Walla Walla, student voice and leadership are being elevated in new and exciting ways—thanks to a partnership between Assistant Principal Ms. Ford and Kristi Richard, Student and Community Advocate, who saw an opportunity to give students a greater sense of ownership and pride in their school.

It started with a conversation. “Ms. Ford shared her interest in starting a student leadership team, and I loved the idea,” said Kristi. Together, they envisioned a program that would allow 5th grade students to take on meaningful roles within the school community.

After meeting with the 5th grade teachers—who were fully on board—Kristi introduced the idea to students. Those interested in joining the leadership team were asked to complete an application with the support of their parents and provide three references from school staff. Once all the applications were reviewed, and in collaboration with their teachers, two students from each 5th grade class were selected, forming a team of eight young leaders.

Since launching, the leadership team has already made a visible impact. The students assist with managing the school store, maintain the lost and found area, and even helped welcome five new students by guiding them to their classrooms and answering questions. “They’re setting a great example for their peers,” Kristi shared.

To recognize their commitment, each student received a Green Park Leadership t-shirt and a swag bag to kick off their service. Next up? The team is planning a playground clean-up project in the coming weeks.

This initiative is about more than helping out—it’s about empowering students to lead, collaborate, and build confidence in their role as contributors to a positive school culture.
